Wizard Scarf by Catherine Piper ©2002

Just in time for Halloween! Stitch up this easy striped scarf for your favorite young wizard!

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn, 1 skein each of burgundy (A) and yellow (B). ( I used 6 oz skeins and probably have enough left over yarn to make a 2nd scarf)
  • Size J crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

Finished Measurements: approximately 6 x 57 inches excluding fringe

Gauge: 15 sc and 17 rows = 4 X 4 inches

SCARF:

Row 1: With A, ch 23, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch across. Chain 1, turn (22 sc).

Rows 2-11: Sc in each sc across. Chain 1, turn. Repeat over the next 9 rows. At the end of the last row, join in color B, ch 1, turn.

Yellow Stripe Pattern:
Rows 1-18: Sc in each sc across. Chain 1, turn. Repeat over the next 17 rows. At the end of the last row, join in color A, ch 1, turn.

Burgundy Stripe Pattern:
Rows 1-14: Sc in each sc across. Chain 1, turn. Repeat over the next 13 rows. At the end of the last row, join in color B, ch 1, turn.

Repeat Yellow stripe pattern and Burgundy stripe pattern 5 more times, then repeat Yellow stripe pattern once more. Continue working the burgundy stripe pattern but only for 11 rows. Do not join in other color on last stitch and do not fasten off.

Short scarf edge: Continuing with color A, ch 1 and turn. Sc in first sc, *ch 2, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * to the end of row. Fasten off and weave in ends. Other edge: Join color A with a sc in the first sc, *ch 2, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * to the end of row. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fringe: Wind yarn loosely and evenly over the longest length of a 3 X 6" piece of cardboard and cut across the top of one side only, to produce 12 inch strands of yarn. Repeat as many times as necessary until you have 48 strands of burgundy and 36 strands of yellow. Join 6 strands of burgundy together and fold in half forming a loop. Pull the folded end through the first loop along the scarf edge, then pull both tail ends evenly through the folded end and pull tightly. Repeat across the remaining 6 loops alternating color A and color B. Repeat for the 2nd scarf edge.
